BNMT’s anti-TB Drone project wins international innovation award

Posted on: December 14, 2020

The Drone Optimised Therapy System (DrOTS) by implemented by BNMT in collaboration with the Nepal Flying Labs has won the TIACA Air Cargo Sustainability Awards (2020). The Awards aim to celebrate and encourage outstanding industry initiatives driving sustainability in air cargo. DrOTS uses drones to fly from a central district hospital to health posts in Nepal’s mountainous regions to collect sputum samples and deliver both diagnoses and treatment to patients living in up-country villages. The samples are tested using a high-end GeneExpert kit. If they are positive, patients are given DOTS (directly observed treatment short course) treatment using smart pill boxes, which keep electronic records of whether or not patients have taken the antibiotics regularly.
